bio

hola
I was born in Spain and currently live in the San Francisco Bay Area (California.)

academia
I hold a graduate degree in Macroeconomics, with a specialty in International Economic Development, and a Law degree, with a focus in environmental and private law. Both are from colleges in Madrid. I also studied French language and civilization at the Sorbonne, in Paris.

babel
I am fluent in Spanish, English and French, and I'm pretty good at kicking the dictionaries of a few other languages.

those devilish machines
Computers can smell fear. I have been cracking the whip on different machines and systems since I programmed my first code at age 15. When I whistle, lots of common applications come running at my feet, some more willingly than others. I dig open-source apps.

the corporate past
I have a dark past working for large corporations, mostly designing policies and procedures, and managing risks. Sounds boring, I know, but I thrived, and had my share of fun. However, after years of long hours under neon lights, I decided not to downshift, but rather to pull from the emergency brake and do some donuts in the parking lot. From this bygone era I was left with some really useful skills, but also with a phenomenal collection of silk ties I rarely wear.

environmental work
I am a strategist for emerging and future environmental problems. My involvement in this subject is very intense. It probably deserves its own website, but I like this work to be in stealth mode... for now.

web work
I consult for social media companies and start-ups and I am the VP of Community and Strategy of BlooSee.com, a social network and ocean mappig site.

I have experience as a reporter, a speaker, a trainer, and a op-ed writer on citizen media and the transformations in journalism.

I am the director for the Americas of PeriodismoCiudadano.com, the world's leading news source and resource on citizen journalism, and the founder of Nuestra Voz, a nonprofit organization helping Spanish speakers participate in the online conversation.

I used to blog, tweet, and all that, but now I'm too busy reading everybody else's stuff. I definitely need to clone myself.

dancing with words
Whether is lambada or waltz, I can take a word out for a dance, and give her a good ride. Major print and web magazines have provided a ballroom floor for my gyrations. I have six years' media experience doing a bit of everything, from writing opinion, to concocting editorial calendars and policies. I also write essay, poetry, and film.

framed
I have published hundreds of photos, including full pages, two-page spreads and magazine covers. I shoot digital, but also enjoy my cheapo 120mm Holga.

silver screen
I'm known for my boundless imagination and for my disregard for budgets when writing film scripts, developing plots, assisting with direction, and producing. I love filmmaking, but I am still unconvinced that it is a glamorous trade -even if you get to meet celebrities whom, I've noticed, make a habit of not carrying a wallet.

earth
I have been enriched by my exposure to indigenous cultures, such as the Tuaregs, who live in the vast expanses of the Sahara; the Inuit of the Mackenzie river delta, and the Naso, who inhabit the lush rainforest of Central America. Their predicament testifies to the misguided nature of our so-called civilization.

ocean
I have crossed the herring pond twice, and have sailed around the Americas for nine months on four-masted, top-sail schooner Juan Sebastián de Elcano, where I introduced recycling. Our motto was. "If it moves, you salute; if it doesn't move, you paint it". I am radio-certified, scuba-certified and hold a captain license.

life
I love nature and outdoor sports. I play classical guitar and I'm learning to play the piano. I use my bicycle for transporation as much as I can. I love animals, especially dogs. I'm interested in Romanesque architecture, vihuela music, and anything from the Middle Ages. I'm fascinated by ancient pilgrimage routes. Like a good Spaniard, I love food and wine. Cooking is my yoga.
